Second Chances

"What's the matter with you? Why are you fighting again?"
"I was first." "No. I was first." "Pranay is a loser." "Vinay, what have I told you about that word? Yes..stop it. And Pranay, stop crying." "But I came first."
"Stop this harping on who's first! So what if you are second?"
"What??" said both the boys. Vinay said, "Who wants to be second? I don't want to be." "Yes, neither do I."
"But you will always be second. You know why? Because I was born before you and I will always be first. Haha!"
"Mom! Why was I not born first?"
"Pranay, there is nothing wrong in being second and there's nothing special about being first either."
"Oh come on, Mom! First place. First rank.  January 1st. Do we ask who is the runner up or who got the first place? Do we wait for Jan 1st or Jan 2nd? What about the Book of Firsts that you have for us? It's certainly not called Book of Seconds."
How could one argue with logic like that?
"Okay. It's true. We cherish everything that happens or that we do for the first time. Finishing first is a goal worth having. Therefore all of our Firsts are memorable. But! A first anything can be special but in most cases, it is not the best. The first step you take..you stumble. The first attempt you make in anything...may be unsuccessful. Coming first in studies or in a race can make you complacent or arrogant.
As for the Seconds in our lives, which we do not treasure or deem worthy... if there were no seconds in our life, what lessons would we learn? If you never took a second step, would you have learnt to walk? If you missed the first place by a whisker, would you not persevere and work for it the next time? January 1st is a clean slate...true! But if you did not carry out your resolutions through to even the second day of the year, what use is the first day?
Yes, Firsts are always special but if there were no Second chances in our life, life would be a continuous cycle of disappointments, disillusionment and hopeless nostalgia."
Vinay and Pranay exchanged glances throughout their mother's sermon. "Fine, Mom. Whatever you say...first or second...doesn't matter. But just remember these words the next time I bring my exam result."
"Good! As for you, Pranay. If you really think that you should have been born first, then from today you can take on Vinay's chores and we will all treat you as the elder brother." "Yes! I don't have a problem being the younger brother." "NO! I am very happy being the second one."
"There you go!"
